Lights Camera Action! – An Early Years Project

Digital movie cameras or 'digiblues' were being used at KS1 and KS2 in the Creative Hub when Artists in Warwickshire Education and Warwickshire Early Years Advisory Team saw the potential for use in the Foundation Stage. Lights Camera Action! resulted in a partnership between these two teams and six workshops were set up for Foundation Stage Partnership scheme sites as an opportunity for reception teachers and pre school practitioners to work together. The whole project covered many areas of the Birth to Three framework and Foundation Stage curriculum. Children were given the opportunity to work creatively with music and movement. After a short talk and demonstration on how to use the camera, participants were encouraged to experiment with filming and downloading. By the end of the day everyone had made a short film clip and throughout the workshop delegates noted their ideas on how the camera could be used.

Following on 'Feel the Beat' was a series of Early Years practitioner workshops with dance artist Miriam Keye, which explored the potential of these cameras to promote and capture movement and music.

"Because the course was so hands on I now have the confidence to use technology that I wouldn't have been happy using before"

"Technology became less frightening"

"There are many more things we can do with these cameras than I imagined"

"Use of movement within foundation is ideal for children with special needs. It is excellent to be able to save this on camera and for children to be able to view themselves"

Many digiblue cameras were bought by the FSPS sites and the outcomes have been recorded and documented into a booklet which is available from Vikki Holroyd or Catherine Johnstone at Arts in Warwickshire Education on 01926 746896
