Project Description

CREATES was Warwickshire’s first creative recycling centre inspired by the North Italian Reggio Emilia Remida group. Building on the best of CREATES, the new centre WEAVE (Warwickshire Environmental Arts Vision for Education) which is based at Whitnash Primary School, offers a new and exciting venue for members to collect materials and sign up for innovative artist led workshops and continues to lead the West Midlands in its imaginative use of recyclate and found objects to both deliver the education curriculum, support community arts initiatives as well as contributing to sustainable schools strategy.
(See website www.weaverecycle.org for more details)

In 2005 Artists in Warwickshire Education set up a pilot scheme where the Creates centre travelled around the county offering workshops for practitioners, pupils, artists and educators. Vikki Holroyd, Manager of Arts in Warwickshire Education said: “we hope this is the start of a long term partnership with businesses and schools that will bring a resource into the area that schools have been requesting for a number of years. There will be an opportunity for every school to visit the CREATES centre as it travels around the county. The response to this pilot has been very encouraging and we know we have the support of the schools."

Feedback
"More fantastic courses please – anything! I really enjoyed this workshop."

"If a centre of resources could be opened with a flexible scheme for small groups to access as storage of such materials is not practical in a village setting."

"These are amazing resources – they give a lot more scope than just using cereal boxes!"

"Its like being a child in a sweet shop – when can I come again!"

"Being allowed to use anything that was available and not being told we were using too much – fantastic!"

"Realising how to use different materials and also different ways of approaching i.e. no glue."

"Having the freedom to create without any preconceived ideas – not something I have been good at in the past!"

"Ideas of what to do with children to encourage their creativity and imagination."
